Loan EMI Calculator

What this calculator does

The Loan EMI Calculator works out your Equated Monthly Installment (EMI): the fixed amount you pay your lender every month until a loan is fully repaid. Each EMI covers part of the interest and part of the principal. Early on, most of the payment goes to interest. Later, most of it goes to the principal. You can use it for personal loans, car loans, education loans, home loans, or any other fixed-rate loan that is paid back in equal monthly installments.

When you know your EMI before you borrow, you can check whether the payment fits your monthly budget, compare offers from different lenders, and see how a longer or shorter term changes what you pay.

How to use the Loan EMI Calculator

  1. Enter the loan amount. This is the principal you plan to borrow, for example 100000.
  2. Enter the annual interest rate. Type the yearly rate as a percentage, for example 7.5. Don't convert it to a monthly rate; the calculator does that for you.
  3. Enter the loan term in years. For example, enter 5 for a five-year loan (60 monthly payments).
  4. Click "Calculate". Your monthly EMI appears below the button.
  5. Try other numbers. Change the amount, rate, or term and calculate again to compare options.

Formula

The calculator uses the standard reducing-balance EMI formula:

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n − 1)

Interest is charged only on the balance that is still outstanding, so the interest part of each payment shrinks over time while the principal part grows.

Example

Say you borrow 100,000 at an annual interest rate of 7.5% for 5 years.

Across 60 months you pay about 120,227.69, so the total interest is about 20,227.69. In the first month, 625.00 of the payment is interest and 1,378.79 reduces the principal.

Frequently asked questions

What does EMI stand for?

EMI stands for Equated Monthly Installment. It is the fixed payment you make each month to repay a loan, covering both interest and principal.

Does a longer loan term reduce my EMI?

Yes. Spreading the loan over more months lowers each payment. Interest is charged for longer, though, so the total interest you pay goes up.

Can I use this calculator for car, personal, and home loans?

Yes. The same formula applies to any fixed-rate loan repaid in equal monthly installments. For home loans you can also use our Mortgage Calculator.

Does the EMI include fees, insurance, or taxes?

No. The result covers only principal and interest. Processing fees, insurance, and taxes depend on your lender and are extra.

What if my interest rate is floating?

With a floating (variable) rate, your EMI or loan term can change when the rate changes. Recalculate with the new rate to see your updated payment.

How does prepayment affect my loan?

A prepayment reduces the outstanding principal. That lowers the total interest, and depending on your lender it either reduces your EMI or shortens the term.

Is the result exactly what my bank will charge?

The result is a close estimate. Lenders may round differently, count days differently, or add charges, so always confirm the final figures with your lender.
